Putty is a dough-like cement used in woodworking and holding of panes of glasses to window frames. It's of a light brown colour. As you can see from the picture in Time, those guy's wore a light brown coloured school blazer.

Oil painting is done on a canvas. Some painters splatter
paint all over the canvas to form patterns of dots. The blood that is splattered all over the white shirts and putty coloured blazers these young people wear is reminiscence of oil paints splattered on canvases.
"a neat touch" refers to the director's use of putty
tone colour school blazers. The author of this article
felt that the choice is "neat". (See above about canvas)
"with alarming relish": The film probably depicted this
young people enjoying attacking each other, and that's
alarming.

Lost is correct. Same as Lost generation, lost time,
lost youth, lost opportunity...
curry favor with masses?讨好公众? Yeah. Just another
way of saying : to gain favour...
attention-span-challenged youth: Young people who cannot
concentrate their attention on a subject or topic for
too long a time. People who quickly lose interest in a subject.

I have not written anything more than a few words or lines in Chinese for over 30 years . My writing skill in Chinese
had been poor even in my high school days. I can explain in English what you do not understand. Sometimes I may even be able to explain it in spoken Chinese. But when it comes to writing it down in Chinese, I am crippled ! I must say that I have learned a lot about translating from English to Chinese ever since I started paying regular homage to this place.

I am afraid I cannot agree with your translation. The "canvas" in the sentence refers to the cloth we paint on, not 图画, but a 图画 undone. Thus, the translation goes:

提个醒，仔细钻研，彻底弄懂文章是对的。但是也不可忽视“速读”的作用。
找些通俗易懂，生词难字很少的文章，用最快的速度读完。人在速读的时候，
眼睛只是留意关键词，语法结构，词组的完整，等等都是大脑下意识的替你
“填”好的。训练速读实际是锻炼用英文思考的能力，语感也是其中一部分。
坚持下去的话，您会发现，您的阅读，乃至听力，甚至口语，都会有明显的
提高。一点个人体会，见笑了。

以下是个人体会和看法，没有针对性。让大家笑话了。
字幕是个好东西，尤其是没有错误的时候，但是时间长了可能会有依赖心理，关掉字幕就又
不知怎么办了。学生那时没有DVD，也没有CAPTION，没切身体会。但是我有一个建议，不妨
把字幕挡住一半，这样既可以利用字幕的“提示”作用，又锻炼了听力。不管怎样，我认为
关键在于要反复看一部电影，直到里面人物说上句，您能接下句为止。这样，既锻炼了听力
又提高了口语，而且最重要的是，您能慢慢PICK UP母语人士在日常生活中说话的逻辑（习惯〕。
别小看这个“说话的逻辑（习惯〕”的重要性，我认为“中国式英语”的病根就在于没掌握
英文的逻辑（习惯〕。同一个意思，好多不同说法，为什么母语人士用这几个，而不用那几个。
没有为什么，习惯呗。有些朋友可能认为直接根母语人士交流是学习“英文习惯”的最佳方法，
我不同意。因为，首先，您在跟人聊天时可能忙于应付，疲于跟上话题，根本顾不上别的。
（结果可能是英文流利，但不道地。〕再者，对方出于种种原因，并不会指出和纠正你的不和
习惯的说法。另一方面，您在自己家，往沙发上一坐，泡一杯清茶，舒舒服服地，才有心情
去琢磨，去学习。学到手一招，再去找老外练，适当的时候把刚学到的比划比划，那效果就
不一样了。说到底，跟人聊天没法PAUSE或REWIND，而初学乍练还就需要PAUSE或REWIND。
再罗嗦两句为什么老外不会指出和纠正你的不和习惯的说法。人家可能并不知道你要学道地
的说法，他可能以为您就满足于流利和没有语法错误。老外夸你英文讲得好，这不一定是好事，
他有可能是说您把这英文当外文说得挺好，离道地还远着呢。流利不应该是我们努力的目标，
印度兄弟姐妹英文流利不流利，我们应该满足于把英文说成他们那样吗？您可能会问，有必要
把英文操练到字正腔圆，地地道道的程度吗？您想，我们跟自己老乡为什么特有感觉，除了乡土
缘分，是否有一部分原因是因为“乡音”呢？再扯远点，不少留学生的很多烦恼，都源于语言
水平。我认为，对我们来说，最丢面子的莫过于被人夸为“说着一口流利的外语”。
不得不说电影的题材。我们想学活生生的现代日常英语，显然就得看近几年的对话为主的片子。
我推荐COMEDY尤其ROMANTIC COMEDY， （如果看电视的话，就得看SITCOM，〕因为这样你还可以
顺带把幽默感学到手。恰如其分的幽默感GOES A LONG WAY。
看电影，电视还可以顺带把文化背景学一些，肯定有一些话，看字幕，查字典也不明白，那就问
人呗。
另外，英文水平跟是否上英文专业，上那个学校的英文专业没关系。英文不是课堂里能教出来的。

有DVD的好处是，您可以关掉字幕，实在听不懂再打开字幕。可惜，这里的D版有时候字幕有落一段。不知道您那正版有没有这种情况。
