so what's the point to care whether it sounds like Chinglish or Queen's English?
What's more, I don't like the word "helpful", sounds like describing a tool, or someone who offers a very insignificant favor. How could this word help extend my thanks to Uncle Yeti, whose in-time answer rescued a poor girl who were desperately searching through all possible sources, and failed, while her boss was waiting aside?
But anyway, thank Xixi for pointing out this, YOU are really helpful!

读些小文章,报刊杂志的,选简单能懂的读,每次记几个新单词和短语,几个月下来就会大不一样。如果您客居讲英语国家,还可以固定、持续看某一个电视小品,了解了其中几个人物后,会根据上下文,并根据每个人的性格听懂对话。听很重要,可以复习已会的词,并对一些模棱两可的词语有更深的理解。用字幕应该是个好办法。
一般来说,精读和泛读结合起来效果最好。如精读,国内的大学英语课本看一套,从时间上说比较经济。
此外,经常到论坛上来看看,”三个臭皮匠..." 可得些知识与语感,也会增加点学习的乐趣。
个人看法,仅供参考。Good luck and start from today!

下例除了 breadth 的翻译有误以外,更微妙的是动词 take 的翻译。“拿出”会让人以为是“小伙子”拿出自己的钱。其实是征兵的中士用特殊的一先令硬币诱惑人们参军,当应征者答应后,就变卦,用别的硬币作为报酬付给应征者。然后再用那枚特殊硬币诱惑下一个人参军。
