``One of the purposes of Secretary Albright's visit is to assure the Japanese that relations with China are not a zero sum game,'' presidential spokesman Mike McCurry said. ``If U.S. relations with China improve, that does not mean relations with Japan are not good.''

“零和游戏”比较四平八稳,可以了。原义是“有你没我”。

请看定义...
zero-sum game
definition:
Situation or interaction in which one participant's gains result only from another's equivalent losses.
在不同的情况下也有“你死我活”的涵义。

插句话:我想是相对于“双赢”“互利”(“和”为正)或“两败俱伤”(“和”为负)而言。Just my understanding.

Zero sum game comes from Theory of Games

A game , or a situation, where the net change in the total (sum of) value
of the "stake" is zero, is called a zero sum game. In other words, when you
add up all the gains and losses of the participants, and you get
"no change" relative to the original amount of money put in, you
have a "zero sum" game. ( A poker game is a zero sum game. The total]
amount of money remains unchanged, it just get "redistributed".)
I am not sure if this term was coined by Von Neumann or someone else.
Theory of games, one of the area where Von Neumann was an expert in,
has applications in games, military strategy, investment,
financial and management decisions etc..
One of the many areas of game theory is the min-max, max-min theory
in management (as well as military decision) where you have situations in which
you have choices between
minimum loss vs maximum gain or maximum loss vs minimum gain.

Game Theory 中文应是“博弈论”,运筹学在英文是“opsearch"/operation research
