A BACHELOR'S LOVE SONG
- For those who used to be single, are currently single, fear being single, or long for being single:
Love is so elusive to me
Always slipping through my fingers you see
This world has lucky guys everywhere
But why not including me?
A lone fight I fight for the sake of love
The pains it's caused I've had enough
This world has lovelorn guys everywhere
And one of these guys is me
(but not the last one, not me!)
Frustrations make me brave for love
I've got to be firm and tough
Every single like me should understand
Never be cowed by pains if you want love
I'll win the loveliest one who'll love me like crazy
To say bye to the Single Club
A cruel one who'll hurt me most but pine for me
To leave a deep scar in me
The lonely guys are everywhere
The happy ones never many
Can't miss the bus and fail again
To leave me forlorn alone
Singing a lone song again
I'll win the loveliest one who'll love me like crazy
To say bye to the Single Club
A cruel one who'll hurt me most but pine for me
To leave a deep scar in me
The lovelorn are everywhere
I can't wait in fear no more
Can't miss the bus and fail again
To leave me forlorn alone
Singing a lone song again
Oh from my true heart I sing this sad bachelor's love song
Who will sing with me along?

In the slaughterhouse of love/They kill only the best--Rumi
"In the slaughterhouse of love
they kill only the best"
Quit the Singles' Club to find your dove
if you don't want to end like the rest
In the world of chances
fate smiles on crazy guys
Stop acting cool but begin your dances
You shall have no more sighs
In the web of games and fun
hides a lady cruel but fair
She awaits till your voice is done
to join you as if from nowhere
So keep singing your love song
till she comes to sing along
Don't lose heart or let your spirit down
your goddess shall descend when mortals are gone

you have thus cruelly shattered many bilinguist bachelors' beautiful dreams. Men are timid than women when it
comes to true love, though they tend to be very brave when it only involves physical desire. They are guided by
mind, not heart, and they refuse to get crazy to show they are cool. What a shame! Only when you allow yourself
to be crazy once for a while could you really be yourself and enjoy life, and remember, you have only one life to
live. Love is no crime in any way. Oh, how I wish I were a man, then I would allow myself to get madly crazy
about you, be you Mrs. Shakespeare, or Mrs. Clinton, you are you, my sweet heart;)

That irresistable glance
of yours
kindled
my mistress' breast
hazy with smoke
I could feel
flames burning
from under her cloak
Did you fail to see
the quivering ribs
of an umbrella red
Didn't you notice
large drops of tears
held in those pearls' shed
Missing her bus one by one
she stood just here
waiting for another glimpse of you
that never did appear
Darkness descended
Time went fast
Disappointed and lost
she got on the last
Today at the same spot
all is but past
except, alas,
that amorous glance
you carelessly cast

my heart beat faster.
very much, beautiful rhythm as in classic Chinese poems. The last line is witty and naughty, turning the whole
atmosphere charged with nostalgic sentiment into a more light-hearted self-ridicule.
of you. Expressions like that are so typically Chinese, I don't know how to translate them into good English, here
are some more examples:
I would appreciate very much if you could help me to put these ideas into English. Thanks in advance.

Girl Waiting for the Bus
She turned her head
just one glance
my heart
knew
I had no choice
Love
awoke
on this drenched summer night
Beneath the streamers of rain
bloomed
an umbrella scarlet red
and under that
your brimming eyes
An eternal moment
A moment of eternity
Night
took away
the shimmering shadow
in the rain
The rainbow
went with you
Only a vague fragrance
of jasmine
stays
in the wind
Are we to meet again
when morning comes?
Tonight slipped its moorings
but for
one thread of longing
and a sky of spangled stars

Witty rendering, my Wild Grass Brother! I enjoyed it very very much! Never mind if it is " loyal" to the original, as
long as the translated version is good, humorous, appealing to the reader. Actually your Chinese version is even
better than the original. Excellent work! I am very proud to have a brother like you!
BTW , Have you read a sort of book review by Li Guotao on the Wild Grass? It is very good; it is an old book,

XY, Fisher, Mrs. Shakespeare, Sweetheart, RedUmbrella, Clown, Lotus & all other cyber-friends. With a
post-bachelor's degree earned ages ago, I sometimes can't help marvelling at the bitter-sweetness found only in
bachelorship - the freedom, the wild fantacy, the never-ending quest for perfection, ... Aware now that there is
nothing perfect in this real world, I'm just trying to empathize, I guess. That's probably why the Bachelor's Love
Song caught my attention and I felt urged to put it in English. Do I really want to revert to those "good old days",
though? I'm afraid not, because ... Hahaha :( I can't be CRAZY no more!
Who is it that analogized marriage to a fortress with those imprisoned within trying to force their way out while
those without trying to squeeze their way in? Master Qian Zhongshu? I like that analogy. It's certainly true in most
cases.
Dear XY, thanks again for your heart-warming kind words. I'm proud of you, too, Sis - if I may call you so. I've
never heard of any Li Guotao, though. Excuse my ignorance. I seem to have been cut off from that part of the
world now and find myself so ill-informed and dumb. Having been in North America for over a decade now, I
may no longer have the heart and the means to even try to access that kind of stuff any more at this point. But
please don't feel offended or disappointed by my blunt feedback. Deep down in my heart I am grateful to you, for
your enthusiastic support as well as your information.
