But now I have to convey this vision to Kate, if only because all our finances, such as they are, are held in common, so there's no possible way in which I could raise the six or ten or twenty thousand pounds I shall need without her knowing.

What is notable is that "in common" is legalese for a type of shared ownership. Upon death of an owner, her interest does not go to the surviving owners but to her estate. So, it can be inferred that Kate is not the wife of the narrator or the couple have parted ways.

Thanks. But I'm afraid find this confusing:

A lawyer I'm not, but:

Generally, when a married person dies, the surviving spouse becomes the sole owner of their previously jointly-held assets. The "in common" arrangement implies that the parties to this shared ownership have equal but seperate interest. The death of any owner will not affect the distribution of ownership among surviving parties. The property interest of the deceased will go to his or her estate, namely the living spouse or children or a court-sanctioned trust.
It is unlikely or maybe even impossible for a married couple to own something "in common."

Wait a minute. Are you saying that with this arrangement the surviving spouse might not be the only inheritor of the deceased spouse's property?

Also, is that "arrangement" an agreement made between the couple when married?

An obscure punch line, so never mind. :-)

Three possibilities:

1) I was wrong about the whole thing; 2) the author didn't realize the special meaning of "in common" or 3) "in common" means differently in British(?) English.
But in any case, it (how you translate this term) is not that important as the reader will get enough information from the context.

The swelling press of canvas?
作者:Last Hermit - 2000/04/10 10:50:03

The high peaks vanish behind the winter grime on the windows of the cottage, still waiting for me to clean them. The swelling press of canvas on the high-pooped caravel becomes three of Tilda's sleeping suits, washed by Kate and hanging accusingly out to dry.

Winter grime describes dirt accumulation on the windows over the length of the winter. Windows look dirtier because 1) the water condensation attracts dirt and 2) you clean less frequently.
The swelling press of canvas on the high-pooped caravel

I'm not sure if press is a nautical term, but it describes the wind pressing on the canvas or sails. Swelling says the wind is strong.
What is a high-pooped ship?

当初读来读去都是“The swelling press|of canvas"。

Last Hermit?

(i) In some countries (or in case of Canada, in the province of Quebec
), one spouse of a married couple cannot
borrow money without the co-signiture of the other.
In Quebec, e.g., married couples are "common as to property". I.e.
everything acquired after marriage is divided 50/50 when the marriage
breaks up. Because of this "common as to property" rule, a husband
or wife cannot raise funds by borrowing without the signiture
of the other spouse. I guess in the case mentioned in your
article, the couple involved is join (or common) as to to property
in the same sense as I mentioned, so the husband cannot borrow
money without the signiture of the wife. Both husband and wife
are responsible for the loan.
(ii) Winter grime
Snow is not as pure as some romantics think. Snow, like rain, is
very much contaminated nowadays. After the snow on your window has
melted away, it leaves the pollutant behind, forming a layer of
filth on the window.
The situation is a lot worse in the city. Snow that has fallen on
the streets is usually mixed in with the road salt (use for melting the snow),
dust, dirt etc.. A strong wiff of wind will blow the snow all over the place.
They cling onto clothes, windows, cars and whatnots. After they've melted,
the dirt stays behind. Reality is not as pretty as the ones shown on Christmas
cards !
I should know ! We just had 37 cm of snow on Sunday ! Isn't this
ridiculous ? 37 cm of snow in April !!!
Well, as an abominable snowman, I shouldn't complaint,right ?! :-)
