Marilyn Monroe: 1926

MARILYN MONROE
June 1, 1926 - August 5, 1962
PERHAPS NO DEATH in this century - oddly enough, other than John F. Kennedy's - has inspired such an undying legacy of analysis and speculation as that of Marilyn Monroe. Did she commit suicide? Was she murdered? Scarcely a year goes by when some new book doesn't try to answer those questions or nominate new ones. As late as l982 - twenty years after she died - the Los Angeles district attorney's office reopened her file, then four months later determined there wasn't enough new information to warrant a full investigation. And all of this because of a waify, dark-haired foster child who blossomed on the screen into a bleach-blond, blue-eyed, breathless bombshell.
Ironically, by the time Monroe died at the age of 36, it wasn't clear how much longer her sex-symbol image would last. Her last two releases, Let's Make Love and The Misfits, had been flops, and she had been dismissed from the picture she was working on because of repeated absences. The movie was called Some thing's Got to Give, and Monroe loudly protested how she felt she was being mistreated. "We're what's okay with the movie business," she told a reporter. "Management is what's wrong with the business. To blame the trouble of Hollywood on stars is stupid. These executives should not knock their assets around."
Less than two months later Monroe was found dead in the bedroom of her modest home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles. She had overdosed on sleeping pills, but everything else about the event has been disputed. The initial story was that her housekeeper was the last person to see her alive when Monroe went into her bedroom about 8 P.M. on Saturday, August 4. The housekeeper said she saw a light in the movie star's room at 3:25 Sunday morning. When she found the door locked she went outside and peered in through the French windows, where she saw Monroe lying across her bed with one arm extended and her hand draped over the telephone. The housekeeper called Monroe's analyst, who had prescribed a bottle of about 40 sleeping pills three days before and had spoken to Monroe earlier that evening. The analyst arrived at the house and broke a windowpane to get into her room, where he found Monroe dead. Beside her bed was an empty bottle that had contained the 4eeping pills he prescribed, as well as 14 other bottles of medicines and pills. Monroe had left no note.
Or had she? Of course she wouldn't have left a note if she had been murdered. But evidence of that is based on who might have had a reason to kill her, not any proof that someone did it. The allegations-like much about Monroe's death-center on President Kennedy and his brother Bobby, who was the Attorney General. There have been substantial claims that Monroe had affairs with both men and that Bobby was trying to break it off when she died. The murder theory is that Monroe was killed to frame the Kennedy's or at least cripple them politically. During Bobby's later campaigns right-wingers even accused him of ordering her killed to prevent a bigger scandal. Even if she did kill herself, it is alleged that Bobby Kennedy was in her home before police arrived and cleared out any damaging evidence, including a suicide note. But the Only firm link between Bobby Kennedy and Monroe near her death was telephone records indicating that Monroe had called Kennedy's office at the Justice Department several times in the days before she died.
It certainly is more plausible that Monroe killed herself, though possibly the overdose was accidental. Monroe had been treated in mental institutions twice in 1961. She spent much of her last year doped on pills and alcohol, getting medicines from at least two doctors without telling each of the other's prescriptions. On May 19, 1962, Monroe caused a sensation with her breathy, seemingly sensuous purring of "Happy Birthday" to President Kennedy in a celebration at Madison Square Garden, when in fact her dazed performance was no act.
Two days before she died Life magazine quoted Monroe as saying, "It might be kind of a relief to be finished. It's sort of like I don't know what kind of a yard dash you're running, but then you're at the finish line and you sort of sigh - you've made it! But you never have- You have to start all over again." In her final days Monroe was distraught over her dismissal from the film and, allegedly, over Bobby Kennedy's refusal to return her phone calls. She spent much of Saturday, August 4, on the telephone, sounding distressed to her friends and trying to decide whether to attend a party that night at the home of Peter Lawford, the Kennedy's' brother-in-law. She was visited by her analyst and her hairdresser.
Amid a gathering storm of rumors, Monroe received a quiet funeral in Westwood, California, near Hollywood. Among the 500 guests, few stars were invited and the press was banned. Joe DiMaggio, the former Yankee baseball star and the second of Monroe's three husbands, kissed her just before her coffin was closed. Revered acting instructor Lee Strasberg, with whom Monroe had studied, wept before he delivered the eulogy. "In her own lifetime," Strasberg said, "she created a myth of what a poor girl from a deprived background could attain. For the entire world she became a symbol of the eternal feminine." The eternal flame remains fueled by how she died.
