Recently a guy in Paris nearly got away with stealing several
paintings from the Louvre. However, after planning the crime, breaking in,
evading security, getting out and escaping with the goods, he was
captured only two blocks away when his Ford Econoline van ran out of gas. When
asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious
error, he replied:
"I had no Monet to buy Degas to make de Van Gogh."

Ignorant as I am that I still have no clue about it. Would you throw me some light on it?

He means, "I had no money to buy de gas to make de van go."
Isn't it very artistic and humorous of the thief that he uses the names of three famous Impressionist painters to express this idea? :-)

Guess you meant to say "Knowledgeable as I am ..." (the structure "adj. + as ..." means 虽然) or "I'm so ignorant that... "? - No, you are just too modest. :-)
