mid 50's. After schooling I was sent to the suburb of Beijing as a sent-down youth, a way Mao Zedong (?? *t
*g dealt with urban unemployment during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). I then was assigned a job in a
factory as auto mechanic, but I did not like the job and kept on studying English. In 1978, I took the first college
entrance exam after the ending of the Cultural Revolution and was admitted into a foreign language institute*B
There I had four years as undergraduate in the English Department and three years in an MA program in the
PLA Foreign Languages Institute , including two semesters at Fudan University ,?? ?? . After graduation I
worked in that institute as lecturer of Enlish. Right after 1989 , my application for quitting the army was granted. I
went to teach in the Beijing Second Foreign Languages Institute ?? ?? ┼ . In 1996, I went abroad to study in an
MA program in Anthropology. My MA thesis*s л ?? *a is the study of how a missionary represented China and
Chinese intellectual tradition in his writings. In my anthropological courses, however, I have oriented towards
applied anthropology in the field of development. I have taken courses in gender and development and
environment and technology, with a focus on common property management. Also interested in cultural tourism
