rule the mice 应同 rule the roost, 此处原作者之所以用 mice 代 roost

A Misty Lane
Wandering in the long lonely lane,
Again it is drizzling
I hope to meet
That girl in sorrow, like a lilac.
She will have the same color,
Same fragrance,
Same melancholy,
Aggrieved in the rain,
Walking by.
Down this lonely lane
With her oilpaper umbrella
She is like me,
Moving in silence,
Aloof, helpless, and remorseful.
She is approaching in silence,
A sigh cast in her eyes
Then she drifts by,
Perplexed and plaintive,
She passed me in silence,
Like a lilac in a dream,
To the wattled wall in the rain.
我身旁飘过这女郎;
In the sorrowful melody,
She walks to the end of this lane,
Vanished, her color,
Dissipated, her fragrance,
Even her eyes like a sigh,
太息般的眼光, and her sadness like a lilac.
With an oilpaper umbrella,
Again it is drizzling,
I hope for a girl
In her lengthening sorrow
Drifting by, like a lilac.

于是她的头发变成了一挂波光粼粼的瀑布;
。。。。。。

My lilac dream
Holding a shabby umbrella against drizzling
Along the deserted lane I was wandering
Making a wish I may bump into a girl
Who is like a lilac and has a sorrowful looking
She must look like a lilac in every way
The color, the fragrance, the mood,
Of course, I mean white lilac, not the pale violet one
And she must look sorrowful which goes so well with the drizzling
There is one coming
Over her little head is a plastic bag drooping
No hello, no smiling
A nasty look is all I am getting
Oh where is my lilac girl
My heart is sinking
Then I heard my wife's yelling
Get up and do the washing
It's ten o'clock in the morning

About "WHITE ELEPHANT" & WHITE ELEPHANT BATTERY
作者:YECAO - 2000/05/13 10:29:15
***
Excellent translation, both yours and Px's. Thanks.
The only comment I'd make is on #4 regarding the "white elephant". I think PX's interpretation of it was correct, though there may be other options besides "LEIZHUI".
In fact what was boarded WAS a "silver bird Scotchbrook" (Whatever it is I don't know.), but it was by no means an elephant! And almost everybody agreed that the nice looking posh "bird" turned out to be extremely lousy in effect. That's why it was called a "white elephant."
From "Cambridge International Dictionary of Idioms":
A white elephant: something that has cost a lot of money but has no useful purpose
E.g. The town's new leisure centre, recently completed at a cost of ten million pounds, seems likely to prove a white elephant.
-------------------------
This reminds me of the WHITE ELEPHANT BATTERY once popular in China. It was BAIXIANGPAI DIANCHI, most likely manufactured for export only for its supposedly good quality. Thanks to its stark English translation, though, it became such a laughing stock on the export market that tons of it had to be kept for domestic sale - CHUKOU ZHUAN NEIXIAO! Up till early 90's the WHITE ELEPHANT batteries were still seen around in China. Are they still visible today in China, I wonder? Hope not!
