The laundromat in the neighborhood, called "The Wash Place," has had a letter missing from its sign for some time. It now reads "THE WAS PLACE." Maybe I should call the owner up on this, but who knows if it IS still there.
Atop a high-rise office building in downtown San Francisco is a giant neon sign for the Bank of America, a giant banking corporation. During the day, the sign looks fine. Actually it looks unremarkable, merely another addition to the city's glitters. But at night, the sign, lighted sharp blue now, becomes a lot more visible. What makes it stand out even more is, the lighting for some portion of the letter "n" is out, making it a perfect "r." On a chilly night, standing under a skyful of sparkling stars, one does hear the howling of the Capitalist Animal!

Enjoyed interesting news articles by interesting reporter Liu! Excellent English!

something similar that I once saw in London, England years ago.
Lukozade is a world-famous tonic drink said to be good to the recovery of health. There was once a giant Lukozade ad that took up the entire side wall of a high-rise building, clearly visible from afar. Slightly tilted in the middle of the picture was nothing but a huge bottle with the Lukozade logo in its original colour. Beside the bottle, in capital letters, were "AIDS RECOVERY".
Apparently the sign was put up before AIDS went rampant all over the world. A few months after I noticed this oddity, I was travelling in the same area again, and I found the "AIDS RECOVERY" knocked out already. Unfortunately, probably because the huge letters had been cemented so hard on the wall, their forced removal left an even visible ugly sign of the same letters, which became quite a joke for a while.
