CChinese names for American students learning Chinese
作者:Fanghuzhai - 2000/06/08 20:24:28

It is a common practice to give foreigners learning Chinese some Chinese names. In giving names to students of foreign language, there is an ideological aspect of it. In the past, our country's Communist/Socialist ideology criticized the use of foreign names taken by some Chinese. In the recent past, there has also criticism of those Chinese who have named themselved in the Japanese style, such as Xzi3, XXlang2.
So sometimes I wonder if Chinese teachers, in assigning Chinese names to foreign students of Mandarin, are also imposing some kind of ideology on them?
But then some foreigners just love to have a Chinese name. In Canada (Toronto?), the mayor of one city has a Chinese name, so tht he can appeal to Chinese communities there.
According to the theory of colonial discourse analysis, adopting foreign names means some colonization of consciousness. Then some people are colonized involuntarily and some are voluntarily.
In the case of students learning Chinese, it is mainly the first case, since students are powerless in such situations.
One interesting case is in my just-graduated class. The ex-faculty team leader gave him a name "Mao2 Zhen4dong1", based on "Mao Zedong", and having the meaning of "revitalize the East". The student is a good student but is also ideologically not pro-Communism. He frequently wrote his name as "Mao2 Chen2dong","chen" being "zhen4" minus the hand radical. His name then means "time east".
I personally oppose the way of translating foreign names that produce something to distant to the original.
But I equally oppose retranslating Baoer Kechajin into something else, since the original name is already well-known and is more than a transliteration.
