In this stanza, what does "notions" mean? In another version, there is no "sweet" after it. In dictionaries, "notions" (in plural form) means small commodities.
About the "tipped his flipper" phrase, I asked an American friend, who also explained it as "touching the edge of his hat".
A white man loved an Indian maiden
Away you rolling river
With notions sweet his canoe was laden
Away, we're bound away across the wide
Missouri
