Frankenstein is the title character in a novel (1818) by Mary Wollstonecraft
SHELLEY. He is a young medical student who creates a simple creature from various
body parts. The creature turns into a monster when his creator rejects him, and
then destroys him. (well, if you are interested in movies, Robert de Niro stars
in Frankenstein (1994).)
Like this well-known fictitious figure, the food is also made in the lab
through experimental techniques. I guess that's why. Just a guess.

Due to the poplularization of the book by Hollywood movies, the word Frankenstein
has worked its way into popular American English to mean anything that is "a
nightmarish creation by science.".Although Frankenstein is the name of
the doctor who created this artificial man from putting together parts from
different deceased persons, the word "Frankenstein" is now associated with
the "end product" instead. When someone has created something aweful
and/or dangerous in the lab,the product is usually referred to as a "Frankestein".

楼下2解合起来很全面。 这个词带有批判色彩， 是警告基因食品的潜在危害。此词直译中国人能
解者不多。

各位的见解／解释很有意思，依我看，各位都是大师。
围绕基因工程食品／产品的进出口，欧美间重开贸易战，看来是不可避免的了。
原因之一是英国一研究小组发现，基因工程食品对试验小鼠的内脏有
损害，因而为英国（及欧洲）抵制美国的基因工程提供了理由。其实美人自己
早就做过安全性的研究，并且发现的确不安全，不过他们并没有公布其真实结果，
相反，还大量生产出口。有报道称，在美国５０％以上的大豆，３０％以上的玉米
属于基因工程产品，究竟美人自己吃了多少这些产品，大概只有他们的上帝才
知道。
据说这类产品也往中国销了不少。有人认为欧美间这场狗咬狗的斗争，对中国加入
世贸的农产品的谈判很有帮助。
