i'm translating a quite religious text. can't find satisfying translations for some terms. can anyone pls help me
with the following translation?
* while you were gone - a handbook for returning catholics and those
thinking about it (the title of the text)
* anointing of the sick
* circle vs pyramid (the author's talking about the hierachy in the
Christian Church)
* loss and recovery (title of a paragraph)

What about "临终抹油礼"? Let's see how the Chinese bible uses this concept. I searched it at
http://www.ccim.org/~bible/multi_gb.html and got only one verse that contains this concept. It seems to me, even
the clergy have been used to plain talking.

很巧,我手边上的Webster's New World Dictionary of American English (Third College
Edition, MacMillan)里面恰巧列有这一词条。你这样一问,我又查了另一本书Catechism of
the Catholic Church(国内入党入团不是得学什么章程吗,这儿要入天主教就学这本书),发
现里面解释得很多,择其要者转述一下:
首先,你上面引述的圣经中那一节的确正是这一仪式的原始根据。这一仪式是包括受洗
和结婚等在内的天主教徒七大圣仪之一,由牧师priest使用(最好是)主教bishop祝福过的油
为生命垂危的教徒涂抹,意在减轻教徒的身心负担,在精神上为他走上天国之路做准备。根
据需要,此仪式可重复举行。在罗马天主教中,油是涂在前额和双手上;东正教则涂于其它
部位(未详)。涂油的同时,牧师进行祷告。

我楼下的帖有一点没说全:所谓重复举行,就是每当他觉得“不好”了,都可请牧师这么来
一次;或来一次效验不够,病更重了,可以再“加强”一下。

书上又说人没病只是太老要不行时,也可行此仪式。也许,“垂
危抹油礼”?又觉得从教堂设仪式的本意讲,“临终”更确,只
要不暗含必--无疑之意。

Confirmation and Anointing of the Sick
Since, as we noted above, confirmation is really a part of baptism initiation, then this sacrament has all the markings of being a further step in the process of becoming Christian. The young people speak for themselves in affirming their parents' choice and, since being a Christian is to do the works of the gospel, there is always a service requirement of the candidates for confirmation (such as accounting for 15 hours of service: at a nursing home, baby-sitting for free, etc.). You may remember the slap on the cheek the bishop gave at confirmation (we had great fun imagining a mighty blow that would send us reeling down the aisle). No more. That 'blow' was an evolved kiss of peace as one would touch another gently to show affection. Today the bishop skip the slap and simply says, "Peace be with you."
The old extremum unction has had a name change. That's because for too long we had thought erroneously that the word extremum meant last: you were on your way out. Yes, it means last, but only in the sense that this anointing is normally the last in the series of anointings that go from baptism to confirmation to holy orders. So the name has been changed to "sacrament of the sick" because this anointing was not meant to speed people off to eternity or to grease those already dead into heaven. Rather, it traditionally was meant to assist the living sick and even to heal them. Life is the emphasis, not death.
SO this sacrament has nothing to do with the "last rites" in the sense of finality and therefore has nothing to do with anointing a dead person. It has everything to do with those mentally, emotionally and physically ill who need the ministration of the church and the prayers of all the People of God now. Which is why if such an anointing is done at home or hospital or nursing home, everyone is invited to be there and take part? It's a community event. And all the more reason why often such anointings are done at Mass before the entire community.
Of course, those who don't know this shift are angry that the priest would not give the "last rites" to Grandpa who's been dead three hours. (but surely the priest comes and says the lovely prater of commending the deceased to God.) Or there are still those who will not call the pries for sick grandma since his very presence is likened to a visit from the Grim Reaper and sick grandma will suspect something's up. So this sacrament is not the last rites for dead, or almost dead, people. It's a sacrament for people who are alive, but ill. That's what's changed while you were gone.
