"Value judgement is subjective." That's the whole meaning of
both "Virtue is in the eye of the beholder" and "仁者见仁."
"Buddha is in the eye of Buddha." The second Buddha can be
implied in "the beholder," saving the repetition. You don't
have to be so fastidious about word-for-word equivalence in
translation. In fact the usage of "XXX is in the eye of the
beholder" is very common in expressing the same idea as
"见仁见智" in Chinese.
I still remember ten years ago a scholar from the London
Institute of Strategic Studies said, "The so-called decline
of Europe is in the eye of the beholder." How would you
translate it into Chinese? No doubt it has to be
"所谓的欧洲衰落是见仁见智的." So you can always replace the
word "beauty" as in "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"
with whatever you like to indicate your dissent.
