rainmaker：有翻云覆雨之能的，有呼风唤雨之能、通天人物，超级说客

www 君在字典上查到了 white-shoe 在 white-shoe bank 一类场合中的意义。这个意义，美国90年代以后，主流字典才开始
收录；而目前网上100多个在线词典中尚未查到。普通美国人似乎知道的也不太多。我问了周围的4个美国同事，没有一个人能猜出是什么意思。后来又打长途电话给使用过此语的某报报社编辑部。第一

adj. of or pertaining to members of the upper class who own or run large corporations: white-shoe bankers; a conservative white-shoe image.)

水前君的帖使我很长知识。我又顺手翻了一下Webster's New World Dictionary of American English，
那里的解释如下：
white-shoe (adj.) [from the white shoes fashionable at Ivy League colleges in the 1950's]
designating or characteristic of a business company, esp. a law firm or brokerage, in which
the partners belong almost exclusively to the WASP upper class elite and are thought of
as being cautious and conservative.
该词是美国用语(易见)。对不十分熟悉的人稍解释一下：WASP代表 a white Anglo-Saxon Protestant。
字典是88年版，94年重印时又有修正，似乎不算过时。只是，如同长春藤学校早已变得五色缤纷，上面
这个词语的外延大概也已比上述定义下的更宽，不再限于WASP的法律事务所等等。

笔者手头上收录 WITHE－SHOE 最早的字典是87年版的 AMERICAN SLANG。但作为形容词，释义只是说
Having the attitude, appearance,etc. of the Ivy League.
又。RANDOM HOUSE WEBSTER'S COLLEGE DICTIONARY (1977 ed) 则给出了完全不同的词源：
Apparently from the white shoes popular as moderately formal wear among suburban men about 1980.
如果 IVY LEAGUE 之说是正确的话，RONDOM HOUSE 就有瞎猜的嫌疑了。可见，即使权威字典，也不可盲信。(当然，
不排除 RADDOM HOUSE 也对的可能性。)有些事情一时没有把握，只好采取姑妄听之的态度。

有关老美没有听说过某些英谚的问题，以及对熟语、成语的一知半解
问题，其实中国受过良好教育的知识分子中又何尝不是这样？
1、同是中国文人，并不一定大家都知道某些中国成语和谚语。所以
各位才能拿出不同的妙语。
2、即使大家都曾听说过某些谚语或成语，理解是否吻合又是另一回
事。
3、即使大家都非常熟悉的谚语、成语，不同的背景，不同的语气，
不同的心境，也可以用来表达不同的意义。
但是，如果有人能够讲出您所不知的妙语，您会因为您不知道而认为
这不常用而弃置一边吗？我不会。哪怕是个美国的中国通讲出一句很
古的妙语，我只会自叹勿如。所有这些只能说明，您的语言基本功不
必非以一般美国人的语言水平为参照不可，到了学者一级更是如此。
当然，在“生活密语”一级，还是应该向他们虚心请教的。
