"marriage of convenience" vs "morganatic marriage"
作者:Sue - 1999/10/30 22:57:35

A marriage between two persons of similar family backgrounds can be called "marriage of convenience" (门当户对). If a poor girl is married to a rich guy, it's a "moganatic marriage" (门不当户不对).

arriage of convinience usually means a bad thing, namely
ppl got married due to financial or other gains.
门当户对 is like a positive thing, and I think in English
it's hard to express that directly in a word, you can say
something like "oh their family backgrounds really match
each other", but to use something more poetic or more
literal, "match made in heaven" is what comes to mind.

U mean a "perfect match"?

A "match made in Heaven" could mean just a bread-and-butter match. 天仙配? It has little allusion if any to family backgrounds.

Re: Morganatic; and "门当户对"

"Morganatic" 还有特别意思:子女不能承继父亲的封号,
近中国的“庶出”.
"门当户对"好像没有相当的英词,要作较长的解释。如:
- Both families have similar backgrounds.
- Both families are similar in terms of social status.
- "Two households, both alike in dignity, ..."
[from Shakespeake.]
