读书评译(9):“引起”还是“结束”?
《汉英翻译技巧》(单其昌编,外语教学与研究出版社, 1990,第211页):
The statement capped a day of diplomatic maneuvering.
这个声明引起了一天的外交活动。
评:to cap 是“结束”的意思。可以译为“经过一天的外交斡旋,发表了这个声明”,或者“该声明是一天外交谈判的结果”。

(1) When speaking to you, people slow down their speech.
(2) When speaking to you, people "talk with their hands."
(3) You "talk with your hands", a lot.
(4) Everyone is laughing and you don't have a clue.
(5) You tell a joke and people laugh, politely.
(6) You have never sweet-talked your way out of a bad situation. (e.g. getting a parking ticket, a speeding ticket. )
(7) You always keep you mouth shut when the conversation turns toward American sports.
(8) You don't know how to quickly build a rapport with someone so they'll go out of their way to help you.
(9) People seem to be friendlier to everyone else than to you. And you think it's discrimination.
These are all I got so far. Help me out, will ya?
