The servant of a rich man in Baghdad or Basra, or some
place like that, went out to do a day's shopping. But in the market place he met Death, who gave him a strange sort of look... Well the servant chased off home and said to his master: "Lord, in the market place I met Death, who look as if he were about to claim me. Lend me your fastest horse
that I may ride to Samara, which I can reach before night-fall, and so escape him."
The rich man lent the servant his horse, and he duly
set off for Samara at a great rate of knots. But when he had gone, the rich man thought: "This is a bit of a bore. My servant is a jolly good servant , I shall miss him. Death has no right to give him the twitches.
I think I'll pop down to the market place and give the old fellow a piece of my mind."
So the rich man went to the market place and button-holed Death. "Look here," he said, "What do you mean by giving my servant the shakes ?" Death was amuse. He said: "Lord,I merely looked at the fellow in surprised."
"Why so ?" asked the rich man. "He is just an ordinary servant".
" I look at him in surprise." explained Death, "because I did not expect to find him here. You see, I have an appointment with him this evening--- in Samara."

How sad: doomed, predetermined, no escape, free will a mere illusion...

Samara有什么深意吗?这个故事使我联想“当代英雄”的一个片段。

Divine Will and Free Will
A brash young man of great learning came to challenge Prophet Mohammad. “O Prophet of God, you have been reported as saying that nothing happens except by the Divine Will. Is this true?”
“Yes, it is true,” Mohammad replied.
“You are a dreamer,” retorted the learned one. “I do whatever I like. How can God's will constrain me? What I exercise is My will, not God's will.”
“It is all under the divine will,” Mohammad answered. “The divine will governs your individual will also.”
“How does the divine will come into the picture at all? What is the divine will? If it exists, then show me.”
“Now stand up!”said Mohammad. “And Lift up one foot from the ground.”
The young man did so. And Mohammad said again, “Lift up your other leg.”
“But if I do that, I'll fall down.”
The Prophet laughed,“And that is your proof.”
The young man was puzzled and asked for an explanation.
Thus it goes, “So now listen. When I asked you to stand and you stood, at that time both legs were under the divine will. Then when I asked you to lift one leg, that leg represented the exercise of your free will, while the leg still on the ground was your continuing dependence on the divine will. If you insist on it, I will agree that your free will has a certain latitude, yet how far can you move that leg without the assent of the other? The leg under the divine will keeps your connection with the ground, and it is through that connection that you move about and act in the world. But if you try to lift that second leg, what happens? You fall. In the same way, any attempt to act against the divine will is doomed to failure.”
“This is what I mean when I say that everything happens in accordance with the divine will. You cannot stop or obstruct what God had ordained. But if you put your individual free will at the service of the divine will, gradually you will find yourself moving into a state of inner attunement with God.”
