"武元甲"为什么被称作General Giap?

Vo Nguyen Giap
越南人的名字应该和中国人一个习惯,"武"-Vo是他的姓才对.
但所见的美国说法,概无例外,都是General Giap.
Why?

"武元甲"为什么被称作General Giap?

It's common usage among the Vietnamese themselves to call people (especially very well kown people) by their first name instead of their family name. It is not an american (or french) usage. General Giap is just a translation from the Vietnamese language equivalent.
If the entire name is used then it is "General Vo Nguyen Giap (武元甲)" as in Chinese.
The former president of South Vietnam Nguyen Van Thieu was called Mr. Thieu or President Thieu by the Vietnamese themselves.
For lesser known (or less popular) people, the entire name is used.
There is an exception, concerning President Ho Chi Minh. He was an is called "President Ho", or "Uncle Ho". Even his Vietnamese ennemies called him by his family name.
It's all Vietnamese usage.
