In rivalry, rivals compete with overt or covert ill feelings against each other without any due process. When two men fight over a woman, it's impossible for them to follow any ground rules and they ususally hate each other. So they are rivals, not ordinary competitors, and the kind of competition in which they are engaged is called rivalry.
In competition, competitors can follow certain ground rules and may or may not have hard feelings against one another.
