Translated a song for fun: Please Hurt Me
作者:Cheyenne - 1999/12/31 09:47:27
***
Please Hurt Me
If you gotta hurt somebody, please hurt me
& if you gotta break a heart, then please break mine
I won't cry if you deceive me
I'll take it with a smile
I know someday you will leave me
But at least I'll have you for a while
So darlin', if you gotta hurt somebody, please hurt me
& if I have to be a plaything, that's what I'll be
Please hurt me, oh please hurt me
Come on & please hurt me
Why don't you please hurt me
即使你骗我,我也不哭;
Song by Gerry Goffin/Carole King

Re: article a while back on marriage -- KY, Thu Aug 5 16:46:00 1999
This is an ancedote about 李鸿章 I heard from my Chinese literature teacher back when I was in high school. I
don't know if I remember it correctly, so bear with me if there are some inconsistencies in my narration.
The ambassordor 李 鸿 章 was asked by some foreign diplomats
about his views on arranged marriages in China.
Lee was supposed to have given the following analogy:
Think of marriage as boiling water. In arranged marriages, you start to
boil the water on the day you marry and let it slowly come to a boil. On
"free choice marraiges", you went through a period of romance when
the water is brough to a boil. You get married and the water starts to
slowly (or quickly) cool off.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying I want to bring back the "bad old days". I am merely bring up an interesting
story that I heard when I was
young. I thought Lee's argument was pretty neat.
(I am sure I have reopened a can of worms by bring this up !)

Talk not of wasted water! water is never wasted, (though it may cool down or boil or spoil); /If it enrich not the
life of one marriage, it shall return /Back to its springs, and like the rain, /It shall fill them full of refreshment: /That
which the fountain sends forth returns again to the fountain.

At least not true with the pro-creative seeds that a man's fountain sends forth. They never return to nourish the
brains as some Taoists have claimed. :-):-):-)XXX

Since you amuse us,
So we love you;
And as you humour us,
For that, we forgive you.
If "decency" cannot save you, then, may your "grossness"-of which we all partake-eventually is transformed into
your saving grace!
Let us pray to our dear Lord to have mercy on His creation,
Let judgement fall not too heavy upon us!

Good poem! One minor amendment... - the gross Falstaff, Fri Aug 6 22:21
>>If "decency" cannot save you, then, may your
>>"grossness"-of which we all partake-eventually is
>>transformed into your saving grace!
After "may" you'd better use "be." Sure it must be your slip of the pen if not a trip of fantacy.:-) So it should read:
If "decency" cannot save you, then, may your "grossness"-of which we all partake-eventually be transformed into
your saving grace!
********************************************
Thank you, Sir. See how already transformed you are?/nt - Is this correct?, Fri Aug 6 23:48

It does make sense. - Valentino, Thu Aug 5 20:02
We do have a saying in Chinese to the effect that in an arranged marriage, the couple date after wedding and in a
free-choice marriage, they wed after dating.
包办婚姻是先结婚,后恋爱;
Paradoxically, however, some people tend to break out of arranged marriages to experience free choices while
others, after the cooling off of their free choices, prefer to have match-makers to arrange for replacements.
********************************************
Ripeness is all - Hamlet, Thu Aug 5 23:42
"There is providence in the fall of a sparrow." If it is meant to be a good marriage, it will be; if it is not, it is not to
be.
What has it to do with dating before or after. Since we may know what we are, but not what we may become,
why bother about tomorrow's boiling water? or the temperature of others' water. Let be!

Wanted: superstitious KY, Hamlet & Li Hongzhi!/n - FBI, Fri Aug 6 00:26

May be too far behind time - Shakespeare, Fri Aug 6 18:39
"They say miracles are past; and we have our philosophical persons to make modern and familiar, things
supernatural and causeless. Hence is it that we make trifles of terrors, ensconcing ourselves into seeming
knowledge
when we should submit ourselves to an unknown fear." (All's Well That Ends Well)
It puzzles me without end how you FBI philosophers or decision-makers came to the conclusion that Hamlet and
KY are superstitious. And I am even more confused as to how you people managed to equate KY and Hamlet
with your Lord Sakyamuni Reincarnate Li Hongzhi. It completely defies my comprehension!
********************************************
It's behind time to translate 缘 into "providence" - FBI, Fri Aug 6 22:33
To equate 缘 with "providence" is a heritage left over by traditional believes. From a modern scientific
perspective, what is traditionally believed to be 缘 or "providence" could just be kind of informatic compatability
or "chemistry."
********************************************
"Providence" is not the same as “缘”... - agree with FBI as far as that point goes, Wed Aug 11 19:45
Generally, one cannot equate terms from a theistic system with those of a nontheistic system. However, both are
ways of expressing the interrelationships of all things and their relationship to the One. "Providence" normally
implies a loving care or divine will (天佑,天意,神意), whereas the emphasis in “缘” (karmic link) is on
cause and effect and the reality as process.
Therefore, "providence" and “缘” are not intertranslatable.
********************************************
Sun Aug 8 00:58
I have been wondering for a long time what is the best
translate for 缘 , keeping in mind the various implications of the word.
I only get as far as two words: predestined encounter.
Is there on specific English word that has almost , if not identical,
meaning to 缘 ?
KY
********************************************
For your reference: - Cindy, Tue Aug 10 19:24
I remember once upon a time when attending a Buddhist retreat, hearing the resident Lama Reincarnation
Boddhisattva Living Buddha Master Teacher Rinpache use "karmic link" in this particular context when teaching a
batch of blue-eyed Dharma brothers and sisters:
We are here for a reason, we are here because we have all been connected for many life times and I can tell you
each of us has some kind of karmic link (缘) with the rest of us. It is this karmic link (缘) that has brought
us together to receive such precious teachings and to practise compassion for all sentient beings and to strive
towards Enlightenment in this very human body.
--kind of a "superstitious" Tibetan version of

"Karmic link" is what a Buddhist would call it... - Cindy, Sun Aug 8 19:55
Karma: action, work, effect, fate. The natural and necessary happenings in one's life, preconditioned by one's past
lives.
"Karmic link" is supposed to be the 缘 created as a result of certain actions or karma (业)in one's past life
which
determine one's present and future lives.
Source:
3. My husband, when he was wooing, said to me, "We must have stood next to each other in the choir of
Paradise at some stage." (Perhaps this is a bit theologically suspect :-)
********************************************
Mon Aug 9 01:25
Before someone else accuse me of being superstitious, let me say
that I am always trying to debunk superstition. Very often, however,
I can't help but marvel at how some "chance encounters" happen
as if they have been guided by an invisible hand.
********************************************
There are more things btwn Heaven and earth, - hamlet, Mon Aug 9 02:51
my dear friend, than is ever dreamt of in your philosophy.
********************************************
缘:karma or predetermination or "chemistry"- as someone suggested, Sun Aug 8 12:22
a providential arrangment; a Heavenly plan

Sounds good, I will think about it /nt - KY, Sun Aug 8 17:51
