Dear Friends,
I am an English major. I only graduated one and a half years ago. I like English and still want to use it in my work. Translation is an admirable position. But I found too many problems in real time translation.
When and how can I become a professional translator, like those Gaoshou in this Hy00 Forum?

It all depends on your own expectation. As you're an English major already, you have the potentials to become a qualified translator or interpreter. Just do it and practice makes perfect. There are some participants who were not English majors to begin with, and yet they are doing terrifically well in translation. It's primarily a matter of 98% perspiration plus 2% inspiration:-)
I'm not sure what you mean by "real-time translation." Do you mean simultaneous interpreting?
The so-called simultaneous interpreting (同声传译) is also known as "conference interpreting." A simultaneous interpreter, as the name suggests, is to do from one language into another as the speaker speaks at a given conference without any interruption. For example, when a delegate is speaking in English, his voice is transmitted via the sound system into the headset of a behind-the-scene interpreter who simultaneously interprets the incoming message into another language, be it Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish. The interpreter's voice will then be transmitted simultaneously via the sound system into the headsets of all delegates. When a Chinese delegate makes a statement at a conference, we Chinese interpreters are supposed to turn whatever he says into English simultaneously as he speaks. When simultaneous interpreters are in action, there's no interruption in the proceedings of a meeting. The speaker doesn't have to pause for interpretation as usually the case with consecutive interpreting (逐段翻译). Simultaneous interpreters usually stay in their booths on either side of a conference room.
Simultaneous interpreters participating at this forum are generally English majors. They all passed tough national examinations to join a United Nations Training Program for Interpreters and Translators (Beiwai) where they received two years of graduate training in interpretation and international studies. Some of them also obtained other degrees at different English-speaking universities after they went abroad.

Very glad to meet you here. I often read your posts. But it is the first time that I ran into you. Xinghui! Xinghui!
I know the simultaneous translation. I have a former schoolmate who got enrolled in the postgraduate program. She was the pride of our school at that time.
By the way, there are some simultaneous trainings available here in Beijing. The training runs three months and charges a certain fee.Is it dependable? Is that the way people stepping into the simultaneous translation?

I'm not sure what kind of training programs you were refering to. Are they offered by Beiwai or Beida? Sometimes, customers are very particular about the authenticity of your qualifications. If it's a well accredited institution, Ok, three to six months of training would be enough for you to get acquainted with the basic skills of simultaneous interpreting. And then what's left should be your own homework: extensive knowledge on a wide range of topics, fluency in both Chinese and English, and tape hours in terms of practice. Every success!
