A new arrival in a country town decides he will join the local football
club, so he goes down to the local oval where the team are training and
talks to the coach.
"How often do you train the boys?"
"We train four nights a week" replies the coach
"Thats a pretty heavy schedule" says the potential new recruit.
"No not really " says the coach "I very into building team spirit so
training is centered around that:
On monday after training we get back in the rooms and have a few beers -
nothing to heavy but great for team spirit"
"Thats no good to me" says the new recruit "I don't drink"
Says the Coach : " Not to worry 'cos on Tuesday after training we get
together and play poker - a bit of money here and there - nothing too heavy
and great for team spirit"
"Thats no good for me " says the new recruit "I don't gamble"
Says the coach: " Oh Well - not to worry 'cos on Thursday night after
training we get together and visit Rosie's Place out on the edge of town -
party with the girls - no harm done - good fun and great for team spirit"
"Thats no good" says the new recruit " I don't like women"
"GOOD GOD" says the coach "You're not gay are you?"
"Of course not " storms the new recruit and the coach replies...
"Oh Well - that counts you out on Friday Night".

From August 1998 until now, I work in Antigua as the COMPLANT’s representative mainly supervising the construction of Michael Mount Hospital project. We have an administration team comprising of the production, quality inspection, design personnel and a workforce made up of 100 Chinese and 50 local Antiguan workers. We work closely everyday and I have a deep understanding of running a team.
At first 3 months, we encountered low productivity and dissonance resulting from the following reasons:
i) We have week, month and quarter construction guide, but it’s too general, not specific and scientific. Furthermore, we have no working system to escort its fulfillment.
ii) The production, inspection and design engineers perform disharmoniously.
iii) The administration and the operation force have no effective communication channel. Many staffs’ good advises are neglected and they are in low spirit.
iv) The culture divergence between Chinese and local workers.
From April 1999, we conclude and take the following measures to effectively increase the productivity.
1, Reschedule our plan to be more precise and reasonable, recalculate the working amount of structure, plumbing, electric, etc, break down the month plan to each week plan and the week plan to each day plan. Then we disassemble the work to each operation squad and let each person to clarify goals and roles and to take responsibility to achieve those goals.
2, Establish two operation groups, one is called progress committee responsible for the construction plan and another quality guarantee committee responsible for the inspection and evaluation of what has done. Both committees work closely and report to me directly. I will balance their relations.
3, assign a translator to coordinate between Chinese and local subcontractors.
However, to completely solve the dissonance and develop a high performing team, I am increasingly aware that team spirit, with its emphasis on full and equal participation by all, and respect for the dignity of each person engaged in the process, should be nurtured in everybody’s mind. Team spirit will create clarity of purpose, synchronization of roles, and resolution of issues, inspire and energize the whole team.
So, every staff member was asked to write a plan on how to integrate and facilitate his work with others. Through this step, I bring awareness to individuals of who they are, as well as their strengths and weaknesses; harmonies and disharmonies; higher and lower selves; and most importantly, a willingness to share and be truly interested in who others are.
Building a hospital or other projects is a complex and systematic job, only a well-organized, spirited, high performing team can alleviate the internal dysfunction and finally serve the customers well.
