Praxair to Supply Advanced Silicon Materials
With On-Site Gases, Compressed Dry Air
DANBURY, CONNECTICUT, U.S.A., 4 May 1997-Praxair, Inc. (NYSE:PX) has been selected by
Advanced Silicon Materials, Inc. (ASiMi) to supply hydrogen, nitrogen, and compressed dry air to the
company's new polysilicon manufacturing facility in Butte, Montana, U.S.A.
Praxair will build and operate its patented on-site hydrogen generation system which offers significant
customer savings of approximately 20 percent over conventional hydrogen supply from steam methane
reformers or liquid. Praxair also will build and operate an on-site nitrogen plant from which both gaseous
and liquid product will be supplied.
Hydrogen is used to produce silane, the raw material for manufacturing polysilicon, which is used for
making semiconductors. Nitrogen is used for inerting during the polysilicon production process.
"By combining our leadership in advanced on-site technology and expertise in electronics, we're
delivering supply reliability, cost saving, and product consistency," said Ted Trumpp, general manager of
Praxair's Electronics business segment. "This contract, which includes the semiconductor industry's first
application of our hydrogen generation technology, represents another milestone in our expanding,
worldwide capability to provide a full range of gases, services, and systems."
Commenting on the new agreement, ASiMi's Michael Kerschen, vice president and general manager of
Butte operations, said, "Praxair's design and their commitment to competitively provide on-site
produced gases to our Butte location supports our objectives for production and reliability in the
manufacture of polysilicon."

equipment to customers in the microelectronics industry worldwide.
