众作家夸王朔
真是风水轮流转,世事无常。
因小说成名,又因小说饱受争议的王朔,近来却因为随
笔集里的文学评论而得到了众作家的公开支持。在最近为王
朔新作《无知者无畏》召开的作品研讨会上,到会作家对王
朔新作的肯定,令听惯了批评的王朔自己也深感“不习惯”。
在此录下会上几位著名作家的评论,以供关心王朔作品
的朋友们参考。
刘震云:这是一本非常精彩的书,我看了很兴奋。文坛
如果没有王朔将失去很大的趣味。中国作家在写作心态上最
好的是王朔。我们这个民族特别相信面孔严肃的人,喜欢这
样的人又惧怕这样的人。而对于王朔,大家往往只注重作品
喧闹的部分而忽略了作品背后刺痛和忧伤的部分,忽略了他
对生活细微情感的关注。
他是在语言上最有声音感的作家,独树一帜。他的作品
甚至改变了我们的语言习惯和生活方式。
王朔非常锐利而勇敢,一本评论书发行如此之好在国内
是第一次。
刘恒:王朔几年前在他的作品中所说的“在每一个牌坊
下面都站着一个婊子”确实代表了他的思想和批判态度。《
无知者无畏》体现了他在批判与写作技巧上的生动性。王朔
能够发现和捕捉属于自己的收获,勤奋、敏锐还有点脆弱。
王朔在语言表达上的直截了当和幽默感是有天才的成分,所
以他以他这些特点来挑战的时候很少有对手。如果有人能成
为对手,文学评论的生动性就有了。而且他人过四十之后,
对文笔的控制更加稳重而有策略。不过在这方面我更倾向于
他四十岁以前的风格,有活力。
余华:对王朔的各种序我一直很喜欢。《无知者无畏》
到底是一本什么样的书一下子很难评说。我一直在想他究竟
是怎样与时代如此紧密的,这是其他作家无法达到的。
《无知者无畏》里王朔给自己选择的位置非常好,他把
自己摆在了一个比任何人都要低的位置。他的力量是从下面
上来而不是从上面下来的,这一点在中国作家中也是惟一的。
对于这些评价王朔也发表了自己的看法:这本书发行得
好,我并不觉得写得好。随笔特好写,过分自由。写随笔对
我来说是暂时的,忙时写小说,闲时写随笔。我有个传统观
念,正经东西是小说。
新的小说最快也要到年底出来。尤其是现在写了这种评
论随笔以后,一说话全是这个,不知道写小说合不合适。
看来王朔又在调整自己。对于《无知者无畏》我们还将
继续关注读者的看法。

All Eyes on Wang Shuo
Talk about the wheel of fortune.
Wang Shuo, who has gained both fame and notoriety for his controversial novels, is winning public acclaim for literary critiques included in his collection of essays. At a recent dissusion, the new book "He Who Knows Naught Fears Naught" received rave reviews from fellow writers, which made Wang Shuo, who is more accustomed to barbs and brickbats, "a little uneasy."
For those lovers of Wang Shuo's books, here are excerpts from what some noted writers had to say.
Liu Zhenyun: This is a splendid book. I'm very excited. Our literary domain would lose much of its luster without Wang Shuo. Of all the writers in China, Wang Shuo is the best poised in terms of mindset and viewpoint. We, as a people, believe very much in those with a stern face; we are in love with and in fear of them at the same time. With Wang Shuo, people are more drawn to his slapstick wisecracking than the pain and sentimentality behind it, and tend to ignore his meticulous attention to life's vicissitudes.
His language is uniquely alive and the most beautiful phonetically. His writings have even changed the way we talk and the way we live.
Wang Shuo's critiques are pointed and courageous. It's the first time that a book of this category has sold so well in this country.
Liu Heng: A few years back, Wang Shuo had a character in one of his novels say, "Under every tributary arch to marital virtue stands a whore." That speaks of his critical thinking and his self-righteous attitude. In "He Who Knows Naught Fears Naught" his critical and energetic writing techniques are on full display. Wang Shuo is good at spotting and harvesting what is rightfully his (whatever that means!--translator). He is diligent, sharp-minded and even a little vulnerable. The directness and brevity of his language and his keen sense of humor, all natural-born to him, are unrivaled. If only there were any competition, we would have seen more lively literary criticism. We have noted more control, strategy, and maturity in his writings since he was forty. Personally, I like the vitality of his style before he was forty better.
Yu Hua: I have always enjoyed reading the forewords to Wang Shuo's books. It's hard for me to say anything about the book itself at this point. I also wonder why Wang Shuo has such intimate knowledge of our present time, a feat seldom achieved by other writers.
In "He Who Knows Naught Fears Naught" Wang Shuo positions himself at a perfect level of reference: he is below everyone else. His strength is in that he comes from below not above. This is also very unique.
Wang Shuo commented on what others had said: This book sells a lot, but I don't think it is well written. Essays are of a free format and therefore easy to write. To me, writing novels is an occupation, while writing essays is just something I do on the side. I am of the traditional view that only novels are serious literature.
My new novel will come out at the end of the year. Writing all those critical essays has affected my style somehow. I'm not sure if it's a good thing for my novel writing.
It seems that Wang Shuo is going to do some self-adjustment again. Meanwhile, we'll keep an eye out for more reader responses on this new book.
