Let me first congratulate HY's back from the brink .Glad to
see that everyone is back in their fine
forms and high spirits.
Sometime ago someone posted a message inquiring about the
translation of wines and spirits. With the previous post all
ended up in mix temporal orders again, I would not try
to go back all those pages to find the exact post to
insert my reply. Instead, I am putting it here. I hope
the gentle(man/woman) is still a visitor to this site and
would pick up the link from here.
Here is a link to a page that discusses wines and spirits
in great details. The page is in Chinese (I think it
is in Big5 since it is a "tw" site.)

我手边上现有皇极经世书，但您以前的引文在旧址上，现在一下子没
法找；去访问您的homepage也没有找到那段话。如果您仍很想弄清楚
那段话是否出自宋代著作，可否烦请您再录一遍，我就能查对了。

On the "table listing the powers of ten" the column is titled.
易通变
with a note to refer to a footnote.
The footnote says
明费宏家抄本作{皇极经世通变}
(and something about an error in the 4 books giving the wrong units)
Sorry about the delay. I no longer have on-line Chinese input capability.
I have to go off-line; bring up my ancient Chinese wordprocessor;
slowly input the words and "export" it as a gb file; bring up notepad;
read the file into notepad ;get back on line and voila! Here I am.
(The problem is that I was never trained in pinyin.
The Chinese language texts in my time has no
pinyin in them.)

钻了一下故纸堆，穷“天”究“地”只得到10^40，即“秭”:-)。
“天统乎体，故八变而终于十六。地分乎用，故六变而终于十二。天
起于一，而终于七秭九千五百八十六万六千一百一十垓九千九百四十
六万四千八京八千四百三十九万一千九百三十六兆。地起于十二，而
终于二百四垓六千九百八十万七千三百八十一京五千四百九十一万八
千四百九十九兆七百二十万亿也。”
(宋 劭雍 皇极经世书 观物外篇下 以元经会大小运数第七)
依此，数量单位看来是：
一十百千万亿(10^8)兆(10^16)京(10^24)垓(10^32)秭(10^40)
剩下两个问题：10^40之上的单位似乎不见于此书，不知易通变是从
何得来的；这些单位是否康节先生的发明也不一定(辞源或康熙字典
等工具书应能解决这个问题罢)。
题外：不知道那时候有没有阿拉伯数字；不知道古人怎么做这些算术
题的－真佩服。
