RE: Joe Y. Zhou
To whom it may concern,
It pleases me very much to write a letter of recommendation for Joe Y. Zhou. I first met Mr. Zhou in the early
winter of 1996. He was a quiet, shy volunteer in the Emergency Department of Saint John's Hospital of San Jose.
(SJH is one of the divisions of the Catholic Medical Center, where I do some of my clinical shifts.) He asked me if
he was allowed to watch a cardiac resuscitation. It was not until after the "code" that I learned that he was himself a physician, trained in mainland China, and had recently passed his USMLE. He asked me some rather penetrating questions.
On the basis of his continued interest in medicine, and his level of training, I suggested that instead of working as a lay volunteer, that he become a Medical Observer in the ED. He made the request of Dr. Birrer, then Chair of Emergency Medicine at CMC who requested that I design an educational program for him, which I did.
Since that time, Mr. Zhou has followed me on clinical shifts both at the Saint John's division and at the Mary
immaculate Trauma Center. It has given me great joy to watch him develop from a painfully shy and retiring man
into a competent and confident physician. He has taken and passed all portions of the USMLE and the TOEFL;
he is now eligible for medical licensure. He has already become BCLS ACLS NRP and PALS credentialed.
When he joined me, his written English language skills were disproportionately better than his spoken language
skills. He had had no previous exposure to "medical English," so his first task with me was to learn to write (mock)
charts. The first few took him a long time and required a good deal or correcting; recently I have had essentially no changes to suggest to his case writeups. FurtHismore, since joining me his spoken skills have improved dramatically.
Mr. Zhou has been invaluable in translating patient histories from Mandarin Chinese for me. (Many, if not the
majority, of the patients that we serve do not have English as their primary language.) I have let him obtain a
history independently rather than translating sentence by sentence. His only fault (if one can call it a fault) is that his history is often more complete than necessary for emergency medical evaluations!
In the year he has followed me, Mr. Zhou has been exposed to a full range of emergency medicine, from
gynecology to pediatrics to major trauma. it has been fun to discuss differential diagnoses. This spring, the ED
began credentialling some of the emergency physicians in emergency ultrasonography. By dint of volunteering to be
scanned, Mr. Zhou was able to join us and has completed the didactic portion of EM sonography. It has been a
pleasure to review films and EKGs and ultrasounds from my patients with him. Furthermore, Mr. Zhou studies and
reads about interesting cases we have encountered. His clinical skills are becoming excellent.
In short, I highly recommend Joe Y. Zhou to you for a position in your residency program. He will be a credit to
you and to the medical profession as a whole. His dedication and effort are beyond reproach.
I am the Director for Emergency Medicine Research at the Catholic Medical Center of San Jose. I have practiced
clinical emergency medicine since 1997, have taught emergency medicine since 1990 and been active in research
since 1991. As such, I have had experience in the evaluation and teaching of other physicians.
Sincerely yours,
Victor Y. Stephen, MD
P.S. Joe Y. Zhou has waived his right to see this recommendation.

Dear Sir:
I should like to be considered for the post of Radiologist at your hospital, which was advertised in San Jose
Newsday on January 15, 2000.
The relevant information concerning my education and professional experience is as follows.
From 1983 to 1988, I studied medicine at Nanjing Medical College, Jiangsu, China and graduated with honors.
After graduation, I worked with the Nanjing #1 Hospital for four years during which I gained extensive experience
and appreciation through my hard work. I was the first among peers to qualify as chief resident and attending in the
department and I was awarded the second prize for Excellent Young Doctors and the first prize for Excellent
Instructors. After I came to the States, I first enrolled in an MS program in radiology offered by UCLA. When I
learned that I could take USMLE and be trained here in this country, I sat in for the exam and passed all the tests
for my ECFMG by the first attempt. I believe I can do well on your radiology program, too.
My interest in Radiology-Diagnostic began when my rotational residency program brought me to the Tuberculosis
floor in the second year. I had the chance to learn, and read a lot about chest X-rays. Later on, during my clinic
years, I had many opportunities to contact, consult and discuss with radiologists. One of the senior radiologists,
not only highly skilled in his specialty, but also very nice to young doctors, very much impressed me and made me
more interested in Radiology-Diagnostic, the most important and frequent diagnostic test used in modern hospitals.
After I came to the United States, I was impressed by the latest developments in MRI. Recently, I got a chance to
be an observer in the Emergency Department of Catholic Medical Center of San Jose. I followed my supervisor
Dr. Totten to read lots of films. I have completed the didactic portion of Emergency Medicine Ultrasonograph by
dint of volunteering to be scanned. I also studied Radiology Cases in Pediatric Emergency Medicine in disks
through computer by myself. I feel that imaging and pictures are indeed interesting. I'd like to spend rest of my
career in diagnostic radiology. It will permit me to combine my interest in performing procedures with my skills in
clinical diagnosis. I believe that years of practice in Internal Medicine will help me a lot in my future practice.
If accepted, I will be a hardworking member of your program and try to do credit to your trust in me. Years of
clinical experience, observing in emergency departments and all those courses mentioned above, coupled with a
strong sense of responsibility have committed me to this absorbing field of radiology. Being simple, humble and
modest, I am confident that I would be able to make myself a good radiologist.
I hope that the information I have provided in this letter and the enclosure is sufficient for your purposes, but I shall of course be glad to expand it should you wish.
Yours sincerely,
Sue
