Ground floor vs first floor; is this a moot point or not ? Do you mean British "moot" or American?

Brit speak vs Yankee speak ! Words that have opposite meanings
can really cause an embarrassment when the speaker and the listener
have different ideas in mind ! It's not just a matter
of po(ta)to vs po(tar)to, and to(mai)to vs to(mar)to..
See..

All depends on whether it's been tabled by a Brit or by a Yankee.

To be tabled by a Brit is to be submitted for deliberation and to be tabled by a Yankee is to be shelved.

Haha, "English as a Second Language for Americans", then

American English should be my third language :-) because, like most people of my age, what I learned in China was mostly British English and I did have to switch from "挨ther" to "依ther", from "bill" to "check", etc.
A very interesting site, and indeed very informative. Thank you!

There is an old song called "Let's call the whole
thing off" that made fun of
ei-ther and i-ther, po-tai-to and po-tar-to.
I think (not sure, since I don't watch
movie much) the song was revived
in the movie "When Harry meets Sally".
:-(

I do remember the movie, particularly that funny Meg Ryan in it :-). But I'd almost forget there's this song in it, had you not mentioned it here. Thanks! (And sorry for my grammatical mistake in my last posting. Lord help the helpless me!)

Actually, I didn't see the movie. (But heard about what the story was about.)
I was looking for the lyrics of the songs "Let's call the whole thing off"
( which I heard when I was young (Hmmmmm) ) and
"Apres La Guerra" on the web and came up with the information
that "Let's call the whole thing off" was used in the film "When
Harry Meets Sally."
I am still looking for the Apres La Guerra lyrics which I intended
to put as a follow up to your post about those "Soviet zones" etc..
I might have to look up my old 33 rpm and try to find a record player
to play it in order to copy down the lyrics !

Thank you so much! Please don't bother if it took too much effort. But if you would still like to share, please take your time - I have a lot of patience, which I have asked from you and got and then accumulated... :-)
