Quite a while back there was a post about "Stupid as in stupid does"
(from the Movie Forest Gump) ( This forum is so active that going
back to look for an old post is a chore, so I won't try !)
I just came across something that can shed more light on the subject:
Quote...
THEY SAID: Pretty is as pretty does.
WE SAY: No matter how pretty (or handsome) you are, if you act ugly people
think of you as ugly .
Now replace the word "pretty" by "stupid" and you see what I mean.
The "they" mentioned in the quote is supposed to be the "older generation
!!" (Didn't know I am that old."
Here is the site..
Expressions of our American ancestors
http://www.rootsweb.com/~genepool/amerispeak.htm
(The quote above is from..)
subheading: Advice and Life lessons
http://www.rootsweb.com/~genepool/amerispeak/advice.htm
enjoy the reading.

(i) I didn't think of it. So thanks for the reminder.
(ii) This forum has moved back and forth between several
addresses and the messages are scattered all over the place. I
am too lazy to try all the different places. That (being lazy) is
nothing you can help me with ! :-)

收获之一是发现了“半斤八两”的现成对译:It's six-a-one, half dozen of the other,还有比“Every dog has his day.”更有表现力的话:-),等等。
“Sooner or later everyone has their day!!”不知隐士会怎么分析“数”的一致性:-)。但那里会出现“The sun don't...”这样的搭配,使人不知该去纠正他们呢还是设法理解。
Above all, it's indeed an interesting and helpful site for learning English idioms. Sincere thanks!

才发现Quirk等也搞不清楚,只说这此类为不规则形式谚语:
Better late than never. First things first.
No sooner said than done.
Handsome is as handsome does.
在最后一个例子中,形容词“handsome”好象名词那样用在两个位置上。
如此看来,阿甘妈妈可能是依样画葫芦将“handsome”改为“stupid”吧?
Well. Acceptible is as acceptible does?

To L.H. 兰因絮果
作者:ds - 2000/02/29 22:18:34

Dear L.H.,
"It's a strange strange world we live in, Master Jack..."
I didn't know you were the person who asked the question
originally.
A few days ago you were showing people how to get around
all kinds of obstacles to log onto this forum. You were showing
them how to get to other sites and use their links etc..
After reading your post, I decided to make a search
using the search words (and variations of) "link CE forum ".
I came up with a few results one of which was a Mr.H.Wang's bookmark.
In the bookmark there were several links to interesting
English language sites.
One of those sites was:
http://www.wolinskyweb.com/word.htm
which has a list of interesting links including
"Brit Speak" and "AmeriSpeak".
It was in AmeriSpeak that I encountered the phrase the indirectly
answered your question.
In a way, then, it was you youself that lead to the answer of
your own question ! Strange, isn't it !
