请教: 可以说: "a staff" 吗?

本人刚收到一封信, 其中有 "As a staff of the bank, you can..."云云, 但我不记得曾见过"a staff". 清指教.

是不规范，但常听说。口语中常常简化，就象

把a policeman简成 a police，把refrigerator简成frige的道理差不多，人们舌头懒。a staff 应该是 a staff member 的简化口语。好象常听人说，但落实到书面还是规范点好。

happen not to be the bank's president. It's different from frige being short of refrigerator. Staff is a collective name. If you check an English_French dico, you will find Staff, personnel, ou professeurs (of a univ..), which means all of them; staff member, un(e) employe(e), or un professeur (" un(e) means "a", I omit the accent sign above the letter "e" in order not to collapse the not so compatible Chinese platform.)
可以说公安(公安人员之简)找我, 但不说一个公安局找. 说董事来了, 不说一个董事会来了. 如果 Staff 可以代替 staff member, 岂非 a committee 就指 a committee member 了?

楼上LAOLIU等多位都说得好，“ I am a staff”尽管“曹营” 里常听到英语 native speakers (甚至是 educated ones) 说，但绝不等于规范。从学英语的角度来说，还是把它当成不可接受的好。在正式场合，尤其书面语，任何一个英语编辑都会把它改成规范的 a staff member, one of the bank staff, a bank employee 之类的。
另外说一句：亏得那人没说(大概也绝不会说) As the staff of the bank, ... 因为如此一来，这银行上下就只有她一人独撑全局了， 那是什么皮包银行啊！：))

Employee is more general than staff. Staff is a kind of employee they don't get overtime pay. That is what I understand. I am a staff in a company. But I don't know what is exact you are discussing.

可是经常见到some rather well-educated native english speakers utter something that is at odds with what I have been taught. "a staff" is the latest encounter, sometime ago I heard "more free", which was equally puzzling to me.

1. 在电影上听到‘more free’，请问这free的比较级，最高级是more free，most free，还是freer，freest？
2. 看见 admissions office, Companies Act, 请问为什么用复数？
一、大一点的英文原文字典都会告诉你，free 的比较级是freer，最高级是freest。但实际生活中，视受教育程度的不同，说法上的差异还是挺大的。教育程度低的不仅什么都是加上“more”构成比较级，而且已是比较级的也会再加个“more”。您这提到的还是“more free”呢，在美国小学生中，讲“more freer”的恐怕更多。
语言是文化的一部分，文化程度不同，语言现象也不同。所以，也不必迷信一切native speakers，还是要学上谱的英文。
二、“admissions office”和“companies act”这里为什么用复数？
我想这里的名词都是可数的实物名词，不是动词性质的名词。也就是说，这里的“admission”不是“act of admitting”，而是“cases of those being admitted”。也就是说，“admissions office”不是“office responsible for admitting students”，其权力还没那么大。有权决定招生的还是校董事会。招生办只是负责管理档案和行政杂务。所以是“office responsible for admissions files”。
这“companies act”是指管辖各类公司的法案，而不是某公司的法案。
如果用单数，意思就不同了。
